Department: Public Health / Environmental Health
Reports To: Health Department Supervisor
The Health Inspector is responsible for inspecting public establishments, including food service facilities and eldercare facilities, to ensure compliance with local and state health laws. Inspectors protect the community by enforcing public health standards, identifying potential health hazards, and ensuring establishments operate safely and in accordance with regulations.
Conduct primary and follow-up inspections of public establishments to ensure compliance with sanitary codes and regulations.
Perform visual examinations and collect data such as refrigerator temperatures and waste disposal methods.
Communicate violations to owners or managers and ensure corrections are made within a reasonable timeframe.
Document evidence of infractions through photographs, samples, and written records.
Prepare inspection reports and assign scores or grades to establishments; ensure grades are visibly posted.
Issue citations or temporarily suspend operations for serious violations of food safety codes until infractions are resolved.
Support the Department’s efforts in voluntary compliance and code enforcement initiatives.
Organize and maintain records, reports, and files; convert raw data into proper reports and formats.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Regular and consistent attendance.
Public relations practices and effective communication with the public.
Methods and techniques of business correspondence and technical report preparation.
Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, scanners, cameras, and copiers.
Respond to inquiries and complaints in a fair, tactful, and firm manner.
Maintain accurate logs, records, and files.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
Obtain Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 700 certifications.
High School Diploma or GED.
Valid Texas Driver’s License or alternate means of transportation.
Ability to type 45 words per minute (preferred, not required).
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office applications.
Strong communication skills; ability to interact effectively with the public and coworkers.
Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency preferred.
Pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
Obtain Registered Sanitarian License within 2 years of hire.
Certified Professional-Food Safety or ability to obtain within 2 years.
Hazardous Materials Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Code Enforcement Officer License within one year of completing TEEX Basic Code Enforcement course.
Standing/Walking: Frequently – office and field inspections.
Sitting: Frequently – office work.
Lifting/Carrying: Occasionally – up to 25 lbs. (files, boxes, equipment).
Reaching/Bending: Occasionally – retrieving materials from cabinets/shelves.
Handling/Fine Dexterity: Frequently – operating computers, writing, and handling equipment.
Vision/Hearing/Talking: Constantly – inspections, computer use, vehicle operation, and communication.
Endurance/Stamina: Frequently – 8–12 hour workdays in high-demand environments meeting strict deadlines.
