Job Description:
The City of Beeville is seeking a dedicated and professional Animal Control Officer to enforce animal control laws and promote public health and safety within the community. This position is responsible for investigating animal-related complaints, capturing and impounding stray or dangerous animals, educating the public on responsible pet ownership, and ensuring compliance with local and state regulations.
The Animal Control Officer also operates the City’s animal holding facility, prepares reports, issues citations, and testifies in court as required.
The following duties represent the primary responsibilities of this position. Additional job-related tasks may be assigned as needed.
Patrol city streets, roads, and parks to locate and capture stray, injured, sick, or dangerous domestic and wild animals.
Safely impound and transport animals using approved equipment and humane handling techniques.
Operate and maintain animal control vehicles and equipment.
Ensure impounded animals receive required food, water, shelter, and minimum state-mandated care.
Enforce City of Beeville ordinances and applicable State of Texas animal control laws.
Issue citations and prepare investigative reports for violations.
Respond to public inquiries and complaints in a professional and timely manner.
Investigate animal bite cases and other injury reports; prepare bite reports and issue quarantine notices when required.
Testify in municipal court as necessary.
Prepare rabies specimens for laboratory testing and notify owners of results.
Perform humane euthanasia when necessary due to illness, injury, or public safety concerns.
Provide public education regarding animal control regulations and responsible pet ownership.
Maintain accurate records and prepare monthly and annual statistical reports.
Coordinate with local, state, and other agencies as required.
Maintain regular and reliable attendance in accordance with City policies.
Work rotating on-call shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and 24-hour call rotations.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
One (1) year of animal control experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Texas Driver’s License (or reliable alternate transportation).
Texas Department of Health Basic Animal Control Officer Certification (required within one year of employment).
Texas Department of Health Euthanasia Certification (required within 125 days of hire).
Texas Department of Health Chemical Capture Certification.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.
Must pass a criminal background investigation.
Must be available to work rotating schedules, including weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.
Knowledge of animal control laws, ordinances, and procedures.
Ability to safely capture and handle domestic and wild animals.
Ability to use the least amount of force necessary while maintaining control.
Strong communication and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports.
Ability to work independently with sound judgment.
Professional demeanor when interacting with the public.
This position requires a combination of field and office work.
Physical Demands Include:
Frequent standing and walking.
Frequent sitting while completing reports and documentation.
Occasional lifting of 20–50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75–100 pounds may be required.
Frequent use of hands and fine motor skills for computer and report writing tasks.
Occasional bending and reaching.
Constant vision and hearing abilities for communication, inspection, and vehicle operation.
Combination of outdoor fieldwork and indoor office setting.
Exposure to animals, weather conditions, and potentially hazardous situations.
Requires shift work including evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating 24-hour on-call duty.
