Job Description:
Under general supervision, this position coordinates foster care programs, adoption, and rescue placements for the animal shelter. This position may also assist with transferring animals to approved transfer partners or alternative locations, and performs other duties as assigned.
Greets and assists shelter visitors, volunteers, and potential adopters; helps with office duties including answering phones.
Manages office duties when Animal Control Officers are away from the office.
Performs administrative tasks, including filing and photocopying.
Works directly with the public, guiding interested individuals through the application, screening, and adoption process.
Arranges meet-and-greets between animals and prospective adoptive families to determine compatibility.
Educates adoptive families on the specific needs of adopted animals and training options suited to their inherent natures.
Provides exceptional customer service to citizens seeking to reclaim, relinquish, or locate their pets, via phone, email, in person, or online.
Develops relationships with rescue groups — particularly foster-based breed rescues — and other organizations to expand placement opportunities beyond in-house adoptions.
Inspects commercial and hobby kennels and catteries for code compliance.
Performs animal care duties, including feeding, monitoring sick or dangerous animals, and segregating or isolating animals as needed; detects signs of disease or injury and performs minor medical treatments; assists the veterinarian with vaccinations and inspections.
Cleans and disinfects kennel areas, vehicles, and equipment.
Assists with front office duties, including receiving animals brought in by the public and releasing impounded animals to their owners.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Regular attendance in a workplace environment.
Education, Experience, and Certification
High school diploma or G.E.D.
Valid Texas Driver's License or available alternate means of transportation.
Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background investigation.
Physical Requirements
Working conditions are primarily outdoors, with frequent exposure to inclement weather.
Must be able to drive a vehicle, work at a desk, and perform general office tasks.
Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs., and occasionally over 100 lbs.
Ability to move about an office or building, and to transport oneself between buildings and to various functions or meetings at other sites, within or outside the City.
Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate a computer, telephone, and related equipment.
Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively.
